Suppose you have a good CAT score and are making a shortlist of MBA colleges. IIT Kharagpur naturally catches your attention. The IIT name carries weight, the programme has an analytical orientation, and you may have heard that it offers a good return on investment.
But should you actually choose it?
The answer depends on three things that are easy to overlook when comparing MBA colleges: whether your graduation background makes you eligible, whether the jobs offered match the career you want, and whether the financial investment makes sense for your circumstances.
VGSoM, the Vinod Gupta School of Management at IIT Kharagpur, is worth considering. But it is not a college you should choose just because it has IIT in its name. Let’s look at what matters before you apply.
Before anything else, check your graduation degree
This is one of the most important differences between VGSoM and many other MBA colleges.
At several management institutes, a recognised bachelor’s degree in almost any discipline can satisfy the basic academic eligibility requirement. VGSoM’s regular MBA has more specific academic routes.
For the 2026–28 admission cycle, the published criteria include a bachelor’s degree of at least four years in engineering, technology or pharmacy. Another route is a master’s degree in Science, Economics or Commerce, provided Mathematics or Statistics was studied at bachelor’s level. The institute also specifies minimum marks or CGPA requirements, with different thresholds for reserved categories.
Why does this matter?
Imagine you have completed a three-year B.Com degree, scored well in CAT and are hoping to apply. A strong CAT score alone does not overcome an academic eligibility requirement. You need to check whether your qualifications meet the institute’s prescribed route before spending time preparing an application.
On the other hand, if you have a qualifying engineering degree, you may fit the academic route more directly, assuming you meet the marks requirement.
Candidates in the final year of a qualifying degree may also apply subject to the institute’s conditions.
My advice: Check your degree, duration, subjects and marks against the current official admission notice first. If your academic background is unusual, confirm your eligibility with VGSoM rather than relying on a college comparison website.
A good CAT score is only the beginning
For the 2026–28 admission cycle, VGSoM published minimum overall CAT 2025 percentiles of 90 for General/EWS, 81 for OBC, and 60 for SC, ST and PwD candidates for consideration for shortlisting. These are minimum thresholds, not guaranteed interview-call scores or admission cut-offs.
The selection process also considers academic performance, application-rating components and the Written Aptitude Test and Personal Interview. The published framework allocates weight across CAT performance, application rating and WAT-PI.
This means you should not build your entire application strategy around one CAT percentile. Your academic record and performance during the selection process matter too.
If you are preparing for CAT, keep VGSoM on your list if you are eligible, but don’t assume that meeting the minimum cutoff makes admission likely.
What kind of career are you hoping to build?
This is where VGSoM becomes an interesting option.
Its MBA combines core management subjects with learning opportunities in analytics, operations, finance, marketing and strategy. The school also lists a Business Analytics micro-specialisation, subject to eligibility and seat availability.
That combination can appeal to students who enjoy solving business problems using data, understanding how companies operate, or connecting technology with management decisions.
Consider two applicants.
One wants to move from engineering into consulting, operations or technology-related business roles. The other wants a very specific front-end investment-banking position and is choosing colleges primarily for that outcome.
VGSoM could make sense for the first applicant, but the second should investigate its finance placements much more carefully before deciding. Neither goal is better than the other. The question is whether the college’s actual opportunities match the career you have in mind.
The IIT environment is an additional attraction, especially if you want to understand the business side of technology. But a strong institutional brand cannot replace relevant skills, internships, projects and interview preparation.
Now let’s talk about placements — and what the numbers don’t tell you
Placement figures are often the first thing students search for. It is understandable: after spending two years and a substantial amount of money on an MBA, you want to know what career opportunities await you.
VGSoM publishes final and summer placement reports. Before relying on a package figure, check the batch year and read the latest final report.
Don’t stop at the average salary. Look at the median, the roles offered and how many students seeking placements received offers. A college can report an attractive average while individual outcomes vary considerably.
If you want consulting, investigate the consulting roles available. If your goal is product management, look for evidence of relevant roles rather than assuming that an analytics-heavy curriculum automatically leads to product jobs. The same applies to finance and marketing.
The salary ranges and 100% placement claim in the research notes for this article have not been independently confirmed against the latest official final placement data. They should be verified before being presented as established facts.
The useful question isn’t simply, “What package does VGSoM offer?” It is, “What are my realistic chances of getting the kind of job I want?”
That question should guide your decision much more than the highest package announced in a placement season.
Will the MBA pay for itself?
Let’s say VGSoM looks attractive academically and the placement outcomes appear promising. You still need to decide whether the investment is right for you.
Start with the complete fee applicable to your admission batch. Include compulsory institutional charges, hostel and mess expenses, personal spending and the salary you may give up while studying.
Then consider how you will fund it. If you need an education loan, calculate the EMI and compare it with a realistic estimate of your future take-home pay. Remember that CTC is not the same as the amount deposited into your bank account each month.
This is where two students can reasonably reach different decisions about the same college. A student with manageable borrowing and a clear career direction may be comfortable with the investment. Another student who needs a high starting salary to meet substantial loan repayments may need stronger evidence before committing.
VGSoM may offer good value, but the conclusion should follow from the current fee schedule and verified placement outcomes, not from a salary-to-fee ratio alone.
So, what are you getting for the IIT name?
The attraction is more than a line on your résumé. VGSoM offers management education within IIT Kharagpur’s wider academic environment, with opportunities to study business alongside technology-related subjects and analytical methods.
For the right student, this can be a useful combination. You get a management foundation while developing the ability to think about business problems quantitatively.
But the IIT name should be one part of your decision, not the entire reason for making it. You still need to work on your profile, build relevant skills and use internships and projects to demonstrate what you can do.
The location is another practical consideration. Kharagpur offers a residential campus environment, but it is not a major corporate hub like Mumbai, Bengaluru or Delhi-NCR. That may matter if you value city life and frequent off-campus networking. It does not, by itself, establish that placement opportunities are weaker.
Before deciding, speak to current students about the campus, hostels and day-to-day experience. These are things that a placement spreadsheet cannot tell you.

Should you apply to VGSoM?
My recommendation is yes, if you meet the eligibility requirements and want an analytically oriented MBA.
VGSoM deserves a place on your shortlist if consulting, operations, analytics or technology-related management interests you, and if the financial commitment fits your circumstances.
I would be more cautious if your degree does not clearly meet the eligibility rules, if you are relying on one particular salary to repay a large loan, or if you are targeting a specialised career without checking the relevant placement outcomes.
Before accepting an offer, make sure you can answer three questions:
- Am I definitely eligible under the current admission rules?
- Does the latest placement evidence support the career I want?
- Can I manage the full cost without depending on an optimistic salary assumption?
If the answer to all three is yes, VGSoM is worth serious consideration. If one answer is no, compare other eligible programmes before making a commitment.
An MBA is too significant an investment to choose on reputation alone. The right college is the one that gives you a realistic path towards your goals and a financial commitment you can live with.
A few questions students commonly ask
Can a three-year B.Com graduate apply?
A three-year B.Com degree alone does not match the published academic routes for the regular MBA. A qualifying master’s degree may provide another route, subject to the specified subject requirements. Check the current official criteria for your exact qualification.
Does meeting the CAT cutoff guarantee an interview?
No. The published minimum percentile is a threshold for shortlisting consideration. Other application-rating components and the institute’s selection process also matter.
Is VGSoM a good choice for analytics or operations?
Its curriculum includes relevant management and analytics learning opportunities. Check the elective availability and latest placement report to determine how well the programme fits your intended role.
Should I choose VGSoM because it is an IIT?
Treat the IIT association as an advantage, not the whole decision. Your eligibility, career goals, likely placement outcomes and financial situation should determine whether it is right for you.
What should I check before accepting an offer?
Confirm the applicable fees, eligibility and admission conditions, latest final placement report, median salary, job-role distribution, hostel arrangements and loan affordability.
