Getting an MDI Gurgaon call can be a good feeling.

It usually means you are already somewhere in the mix of serious MBA options, and the next question becomes much harder: if I actually convert MDI, should I join?

There is no shortage of information about MDI online. You will find rankings, placement numbers, recruiter lists, highest packages and plenty of people telling you that it is one of India’s top B-schools.

All of that is useful, but it doesn’t really answer the question a student has to make.

You are potentially spending more than ₹26 lakh on the programme, and considerably more once your personal expenses are added. If you are taking a loan, you may be paying for this decision for several years after graduation.

So let’s look at MDI from that perspective.

What are you actually getting for your money, and does it make sense for your career?

First, Forget the Ranking for a Moment

If you are comparing MDI with IIMs, FMS, XLRI or other established B-schools, it is very easy to get caught up in rankings.

MDI was ranked 9th in Management in NIRF 2025, which tells you that it is firmly established among India’s better-known management institutes.

But a ranking doesn’t tell you whether you should spend ₹26 lakh on it.

That depends much more on your career plans and the alternatives you have.

For example, if your other option is FMS Delhi, the conversation is very different from a situation where your other option is a lesser-known private B-school.

So rather than asking where MDI stands on a ranking table, it is more useful to ask what happens once you actually join.

The Biggest Reason Students Choose MDI: Placements

Let’s start with the part most students care about.

The latest 2024–26 placement data for MDI’s flagship PGDM reports an average CTC of ₹29.5 lakh, with a median of ₹29 lakh.

The highest reported CTC was ₹97.5 lakh.

There were also strong numbers at different levels of the batch. The top 10% averaged ₹45.7 lakh, the top 25% averaged ₹40.5 lakh and the top 50% averaged ₹35.4 lakh.

These numbers paint a fairly positive picture.

But there is something else here that I think students should notice.

The average and median are very close.

That’s more useful to me as a reviewer than the highest package.

A college can advertise a very high highest salary, but that number tells you very little about what an ordinary student might experience. A median of ₹29 lakh gives you a much better starting point when you are trying to work out whether the MBA makes financial sense.

It still doesn’t mean you will personally earn ₹29 lakh.

Your previous experience, academics, internship, skills, interview performance and the roles you target will all matter.

So use ₹29 lakh as a reference point, not a promise.

What Kind of Jobs Are You Buying Access To?

This is where MDI becomes more interesting than simply looking at the salary number.

The recruiter base is spread across consulting, BFSI, FMCG/FMCD, technology, healthcare and other sectors. The latest placement process involved 157 recruiters across the major two-year programmes.

That matters because you aren’t entering an MBA where one industry dominates the entire placement season.

If you start MDI thinking you want consulting and change your mind after a year, there are other paths available.

If you start with finance and later discover that marketing or general management suits you better, there is room to move.

That flexibility is valuable, particularly for students who know they want a corporate career but haven’t completely figured out the exact function yet.

And Then There Is Gurugram

This is probably the part of MDI that is easiest to underestimate.

A lot of college brochures talk about “industry exposure”. MDI doesn’t need to work very hard to make that argument because of where it is located.

Gurugram is already packed with consulting firms, banks, technology companies, FMCG businesses and multinational corporations.

Does that mean you can walk out of MDI and get a job in Cyber City?

Obviously not.

You still need to compete for internships and placements.

But being located in one of India’s largest corporate hubs gives the institute a natural advantage when it comes to industry interaction, corporate events, competitions, guest sessions and networking.

If you eventually want to work in Delhi-NCR, that becomes even more relevant.

This is why we have given MDI 9.8/10 for location advantage.

Is the MDI Brand Still Worth Paying For?

MDI was established in 1973.

That is important because a business school becomes valuable partly through what happens to its graduates after they leave.

Someone who graduated 15 or 20 years ago may now be working in a position where they influence hiring, referrals or business relationships. That is how an alumni network gradually becomes useful.

MDI reports more than 13,000 alumni across 54 countries.

The institute also has AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA accreditation.

So there is a fairly mature ecosystem behind the MDI name.

But I would still be careful about one thing.

Don’t pay for the brand alone.

The brand is useful because it can help get you into the consideration set of recruiters. After that, your own profile takes over.

A student with a strong internship, good communication skills and relevant technical knowledge can make much more of an MDI degree than someone who simply relies on the name of the institute.

Now Comes the Difficult Question: Is MDI Worth the Money?

This is where I would spend more time if I were advising a student personally.

The current published fee for the 2027–29 PGDM is ₹26.55 lakh.

That is already a substantial amount.

You will also spend money on travel, personal expenses, laptop/software, clothing and other things during the two years.

So your real cost will be higher.

And if you are taking a loan, the number that matters isn’t the fee on the admission document. It is the amount you will eventually repay.

This is where MDI can be a very different decision for two students.

Imagine Student A has the money available and doesn’t need to take a large loan.

Student B needs to borrow ₹25 lakh.

They are looking at exactly the same college, exactly the same placements and exactly the same degree.

But MDI is a very different financial decision for Student B.

That’s why our ROI rating is 8/10, even though the placement rating is 9/10.

The outcomes are strong.

The investment isn’t small.

Don’t Make the Common “Average Package vs Fee” Mistake

It is tempting to do this:

₹29.5 lakh average salary > ₹26.55 lakh fee

Therefore, “I will recover the MBA cost in one year.”

That’s not how it works.

CTC isn’t take-home salary.

There is tax.

There may be variable pay.

You have living expenses.

You have loan interest if you borrowed money.

And most importantly, your salary is not the same thing as the amount available to repay your MBA.

If you are financing MDI through a loan, I would personally build your calculation around the median CTC or a conservative salary assumption, not the average and definitely not the highest package.

That gives you a much safer picture.

What About the Academic Side?

MDI isn’t simply a placement factory.

The programmes use cases, projects, simulations and other forms of experiential learning. Students also have room to take electives and develop a more specific area of interest.

The institute has been putting more emphasis on AI and analytics, including through its Centre on Artificial Intelligence and its Application in Business.

There is also a CFA Institute affiliation for the PGDM, which is particularly relevant for students interested in finance.

This is useful because the MBA job market is changing.

Knowing finance is useful.

Knowing finance and being comfortable with data and technology can be even more useful.

The same applies to marketing, operations and other functions.

What Will Your Two Years at MDI Feel Like?

This is harder to measure.

MDI has a residential campus of around 37 acres, and a large part of your MBA experience will happen outside the classroom.

You’ll be working with the same people on assignments, projects and competitions. You’ll spend a lot of time preparing for internships and placements.

For some students, this is exactly what they want from an MBA.

For others, the workload and residential environment can be tiring.

There are mixed student discussions online about workload, administration and hostel experience. We would treat these as community observations rather than facts about every student’s experience.

If you have already received an MDI convert, this is one area where I would strongly suggest talking to current students.

Don’t ask them:

“Is MDI good?”

Ask:

“What do you wish you knew before joining?”

That usually gets a much more useful answer.

So Where Does MDI Really Stand?

If you put everything together, MDI’s strongest case is quite straightforward.

You have a mature brand, a strong placement ecosystem, a broad recruiter base, a large alumni network and a very useful corporate location.

The main drawback is not really academic quality or recruiter access.

It is what you have to pay for that access.

And that is why MDI should be compared carefully with the colleges you have actually converted.

What If You Have Another College?

This is where I would avoid giving students a simple “MDI is better than X” answer.

Suppose you have MDI and FMS.

FMS has a dramatically different fee structure.

So the question becomes:

How much additional money are you willing to spend for the MDI experience and its particular career ecosystem?

If you have MDI and IIM Indore or IIM Kozhikode, the decision becomes different again.

Now you may care more about the IIM brand, alumni network, campus, programme structure and location.

With XLRI, the comparison can change again, particularly if HR is part of your career plan.

So don’t compare colleges only by their ranking.

Compare the offers you actually have.

That is where a college comparison becomes useful.

A Few Alternatives Worth Looking At

CollegeWhat Makes the Comparison Interesting
FMS DelhiVery low fee changes the entire ROI calculation.
IIM MumbaiParticularly relevant for operations, supply chain and technology-oriented careers.
IIM Indore / IIM KozhikodeIIM brand, alumni network and career outcomes provide a different proposition.
XLRI JamshedpurParticularly worth comparing for HR and established corporate career paths.

This isn’t a ranking.

The right choice can change depending on your CAT score, programme, career goal and finances.

Do You Need Extra Certifications?

Probably not as many as you think.

If you’re heading towards finance, CFA can complement the MBA well. NISM can make sense for specific financial-services roles.

If you want marketing, a practical digital marketing credential can be more useful than another generic management certificate.

And if you want analytics, learning SQL, Power BI, Python or Tableau may add more value to your profile than collecting certificates with little connection to the jobs you want.

Think of certifications as something that fills a gap in your profile.

Not something you collect because the MBA isn’t enough.

Who Is MDI Really Suitable For?

MDI makes a lot of sense for the student who wants a mainstream corporate career and is considering consulting, finance, BFSI, FMCG, marketing, analytics or general management.

It is also particularly attractive if you want to build your career in Delhi-NCR.

But I wouldn’t advise someone to take a huge loan simply because “MDI is a top college”.

The financial side has to work for you.

And Who Should Look Elsewhere?

If you have a very strong low-cost option, don’t dismiss it just because MDI sounds more prestigious.

If you have FMS, for example, the fee difference is so significant that you should run the numbers carefully before making the decision.

Similarly, if another college gives you a programme that is much closer to your intended career, that can outweigh a relatively small difference in institutional reputation.

The best MBA is not necessarily the college with the strongest brand.

It is the college that gives you the best combination of career opportunity, cost and long-term flexibility.

Final Verdict: Should You Join MDI Gurgaon?

MBAComparison Score: 8.9/10

Recommendation: Highly Recommended

If you have converted MDI Gurgaon, you have a serious MBA option in front of you.

The placement numbers are strong. The brand is established. The alumni network is mature. The recruiter base is broad. And the Gurugram location gives MDI something that many colleges simply cannot replicate.

But don’t let the reputation make the decision for you.

The current fee is around ₹26.55 lakh before your personal expenses. If you are borrowing a significant amount, the decision deserves much more thought.

Look at the ₹29 lakh median CTC, not the ₹97.5 lakh highest package.

Look at the career you actually want.

Look at the other colleges you have converted.

And then ask yourself one final question:

“Would I still choose MDI if I had to pay for it myself?”

If the answer is yes, and the finances are manageable, MDI is a strong choice.

If the answer is no because the loan would put you under significant financial pressure, don’t ignore that feeling just because MDI has a strong name.

The MDI brand is valuable. But your career and your financial situation are more important than the brand.
