If you are looking at IIM Kozhikode, there is one question you should ask before getting too excited about the IIM tag:
Is it the right MBA for you, considering your CAT score, the money you will spend and the other colleges you may have converted?
That is a much more useful question than simply asking whether IIM Kozhikode is a good college.
IIM Kozhikode is clearly one of India’s leading management institutes. It was established in 1996 and has built a strong reputation in a relatively short period. In the NIRF 2025 Management rankings, it was ranked #3 for the third consecutive year.
But that does not automatically mean it is the best option for every student.
Your answer can change depending on whether you are choosing between IIM Kozhikode and another top IIM, FMS, XLRI, a newer IIM, or a good job that you already have.
After looking at the brand, academics, placements, fees, campus and likely ROI, MBAComparison gives IIM Kozhikode an 8.9/10 rating — Highly Recommended.

Final Recommendation
Overall Score: 8.9/10
Recommendation: Highly Recommended
Ideal For: High CAT percentile scorers, particularly those targeting consulting, finance, general management and other competitive corporate roles. It can also be attractive for non-engineering and female candidates who benefit from the institute’s diversity components, as well as students considering the specialised PGP-F and PGP-LSM programmes.
Not Ideal For: Students who strongly prefer a metro-campus environment or are not comfortable with the academic workload and competitive nature of a large, high-performing MBA cohort.

The Short Answer: Should You Join IIM Kozhikode?
Yes — in most cases, I would seriously consider it.
But I would not take it simply because it says IIM on the offer letter.
IIM Kozhikode has moved well beyond the perception of being simply another “newer IIM.” It is now firmly established among India’s top management schools. Its #3 position in NIRF 2025 is one indication of that, but the more important question for a student is what happens after those two years.
And this is where IIM Kozhikode makes a strong case.
The institute has a mature academic system, a large alumni base, a strong recruiter network and a campus experience that is quite different from what you get at many city-based business schools.
At the same time, you are paying a substantial amount for the MBA.
The current official fee structure for the 2026–28 PGP is ₹23.50 lakh, before considering some expenses that sit outside the programme fee. So this is not a decision where “I’ll take the loan and figure it out later” is a sensible approach.
You should know what you are buying.
What Are You Really Paying For?
The obvious answer is an MBA from one of India’s better-known IIMs.
But the value is not just the degree.
You are paying for the academic environment, peer group, recruiter access, alumni network, internships, campus experience and the career options that can open up after graduation.
IIM Kozhikode’s 2025 final placement report covered the PGP, PGP-Finance and PGP-LSM placement pool. It reported 169 recruiters and 561 participating students, with a highest CTC of ₹81 lakh, mean CTC of ₹28.18 lakh and median CTC of ₹27.50 lakh.
The median figure is particularly useful.
The highest package of ₹81 lakh makes for a good headline, but it is not the number I would use to decide whether you should take an education loan.
A median of ₹27.50 lakh gives you a much better sense of where the middle of the placement pool stood.
There is one important qualification, though.
The published 2025 placement report combines PGP, PGP Finance and PGP LSM. So the ₹28.18 lakh mean should not be presented as the average salary of the regular PGP alone.
That distinction matters when you compare IIM Kozhikode with another college.

Placement: Look Beyond the Highest Package
IIM Kozhikode’s placement numbers are strong.
The 2025 placement report shows opportunities across consulting, finance, general management, sales and marketing, IT and analytics, and operations. Consulting accounted for 32% of the reported roles, followed by finance at 19.2%, general management at 16.4%, sales and marketing at 14.4%, IT and analytics at 13.5%, and operations at 4.5%.
That tells you something more useful than the highest CTC.
There is a fairly broad career market available to students.
If you want consulting, there is a strong presence.
If you want finance, there are opportunities there as well.
If consulting or finance is not your target, you are not necessarily forced into one narrow placement route. Marketing, general management, analytics and operations also form a meaningful part of the placement mix.
But I would still ask one more question before joining:
What percentage of the batch gets the kind of role you actually want?
That is more useful than knowing that somebody in the batch got ₹81 lakh.
And I would be careful with claims about a current “100% placement rate”. The latest publicly available official report does not clearly publish a separate current PGP-only placement percentage, so MBAComparison has not treated that as independently verified.
The IIM Kozhikode Academic Experience
This is one area where students sometimes don’t spend enough time.
Before choosing an MBA, look at what you are actually going to study.
IIM Kozhikode’s PGP covers the expected management foundations — economics, finance, accounting, marketing, operations, organisational behaviour, information systems and strategy.
But there is also considerable depth in areas such as financial modelling, derivatives, corporate valuation, investment analysis, risk measurement, equity research and other finance-related subjects.
The teaching approach is not limited to classroom lectures either. The programme uses case discussions, simulations, projects, group discussions, assignments and continuous evaluation.
That matters because an MBA should ideally teach you how to apply concepts rather than simply remember them for an examination.
The institute also has access to resources such as Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters databases, simulation and behavioural labs, communication facilities and an ideation lab.
There is another advantage that is easy to overlook: international exposure.
IIM Kozhikode currently lists 42 partner management institutes for international exchange.
That may be useful if you want to add an international experience to your MBA, although I would not choose the college solely because of the exchange programme.
The IIM Brand Is Valuable. But Don’t Overvalue It.
There is no point pretending otherwise.
The IIM Kozhikode name carries weight.
It can help when you apply for your first job after an MBA, and over time the value of the alumni network becomes increasingly important.
But the IIM tag should not become a substitute for comparing your alternatives.
Suppose you have IIM Kozhikode and another top B-school.
The fact that one of them is an IIM does not end the discussion.
You should compare the actual placement outcomes, roles, fees, location, alumni network and the career you want.
This becomes even more important if you already have a good job.
Someone earning ₹5–6 lakh before the MBA may look at IIM Kozhikode very differently from someone already earning ₹15–18 lakh with good career progression.
For the first student, the MBA could represent a major career jump.
For the second, the opportunity cost of leaving a good job for two years is much higher.
ROI: Don’t Just Divide Salary by Fees
This is probably the most common mistake students make when comparing MBA colleges.
They take the fee and divide it by the average package.
The calculation looks neat.
Real life isn’t.
The current IIM Kozhikode PGP fee is ₹23.50 lakh.
Then you have to consider living expenses, personal expenses and potentially education-loan interest.
More importantly, you have to consider the salary you would have earned if you had not done the MBA.
That changes the calculation considerably.
If you are currently earning ₹6 lakh and expect a substantial jump after IIM Kozhikode, the MBA can make a lot of financial sense.
If you are already earning ₹15 lakh and your likely post-MBA role is only marginally better, the calculation becomes much less attractive.
So instead of asking:
“What is the average package?”
I would ask:
“Where am I likely to be three years after graduation if I do this MBA, compared with where I would be if I don’t?”
That is a much better ROI question.
One Thing I Like About IIM Kozhikode
The institute gives students room to build different career paths.
You don’t have to enter the MBA knowing exactly what you want to do.
Someone can enter thinking about finance and later move towards consulting.
Another student may come in wanting marketing and discover an interest in general management or analytics.
The breadth of the programme and the recruiter mix gives students some flexibility.
The institute also has a strong entrepreneurship ecosystem. IIMK LIVE, the institute’s incubation initiative, says it has supported 155 startups and 357 promoters through its flagship Business Incubation Programme.
So if entrepreneurship is something you genuinely want to explore, there is more here than just campus placements.
But There Are a Few Things You Should Think About
The first is the location.
Kozhikode has a beautiful residential campus, and the institute itself describes the campus as being spread over roughly 112 acres in Kunnamangalam.
But it isn’t Mumbai, Delhi NCR or Bengaluru.
If you value being surrounded by startups, consulting offices, corporate headquarters and frequent industry events during your MBA, a metro-based school can offer a different experience.
That doesn’t make IIM Kozhikode’s location bad.
It simply means you should decide what kind of MBA experience you want.
The second consideration is the cost.
₹23.50 lakh is a significant amount of money.
The placement outcomes make the fee defensible, but I would still calculate your own loan repayment rather than relying on the institute’s average or median salary.
And finally, don’t underestimate the academic and competitive environment.
A strong peer group is one of the biggest advantages of IIM Kozhikode.
It can also mean that being an average performer in the class is very different from being an average performer at a less competitive college.
You should be comfortable with that.
Who Should Seriously Consider IIM Kozhikode?
I would seriously consider IIM Kozhikode if you have a strong CAT score and want to build a career in consulting, finance, general management, marketing, analytics or another competitive corporate function.
It also makes sense if your alternative is a similarly priced MBA from a college with a considerably weaker brand or recruiter ecosystem.
For students from non-engineering backgrounds, the admission process can also be worth studying carefully because IIM Kozhikode awards academic diversity points to eligible candidates. Female and transgender candidates can receive gender-diversity points as well.
And if you have relevant professional experience, that can also influence the admission score.
But I would not join simply because you have crossed a particular CAT percentile.
Your alternatives matter.
Who Should Think Twice?
If you already have a strong job and good career progression, do the maths before leaving it.
If you have converted an older IIM, FMS Delhi, XLRI or another school with a comparable or stronger career outcome, compare the actual numbers rather than assuming IIM Kozhikode automatically wins.
And if you are uncomfortable with a residential campus away from India’s major corporate hubs, think about whether that environment suits you.
Most importantly, don’t make the decision because:
“It’s an IIM, so I have to take it.”
Two years of your career and more than ₹23 lakh of programme fees are too significant for that to be the only reason.

What Should You Add Alongside the MBA?
I wouldn’t recommend collecting certificates just to make your resume look longer.
Use the MBA to build a strong base and then add one skill that supports the career you actually want.
For finance, CFA can make sense.
For risk and banking, FRM can be useful.
For analytics, build real skills in SQL, Python, Power BI or similar tools.
For marketing, digital marketing and analytics skills can complement the MBA.
For HR, a recognised HR certification may be more useful than collecting several generic online certificates.
The principle is simple:
MBA + one strong domain skill + good internship experience is usually a better combination than MBA + ten certificates.
IIM Kozhikode vs Other Options
This is where I would be careful about giving students a simple ranking.
If you have IIM Kozhikode, compare it with the actual colleges you have converted.
For example, IIM Lucknow reported a ₹32.3 lakh mean CTC and ₹31 lakh median CTC in its 2025 final placement report for its PGP and PGP-ABM placement pool.
FMS Delhi is a completely different ROI proposition because its MBA fee is dramatically lower than most top IIMs, while its latest final placement report for the 2024–26 batch reported an average CTC of ₹32.27 lakh and median of ₹29.59 lakh.
XLRI is another serious comparison, particularly if your career interests are aligned with its BM or HRM programmes.
So the right question isn’t:
“Is IIM Kozhikode better than FMS?”
It is:
“Given my CAT score, career goal, fees, location preference and the colleges I have actually converted, which option leaves me in the strongest position?”
That is the comparison worth making.
Final Verdict: Should You Join IIM Kozhikode?
MBAComparison Rating: 8.9/10 — Highly Recommended
IIM Kozhikode is a college I would ask serious MBA aspirants to consider.
The brand is strong. The academic environment is mature. The placement ecosystem is broad. The alumni network has depth. And the campus experience is something that many students will genuinely value.
But I wouldn’t sell it as a guaranteed high-ROI MBA simply because the highest package is ₹81 lakh.
Your own outcome will depend on your profile, the roles you target, how you perform during the programme and the alternatives you are giving up.
And that last point is important.
If your alternative is a lesser-known private MBA at a similar cost, IIM Kozhikode is a very strong choice.
If you have another top B-school with comparable or better career outcomes, compare them carefully.
If you already have a good job, calculate the opportunity cost before making the jump.
In the end, the decision isn’t really:
“Is IIM Kozhikode a good college?”
It is:
“Will IIM Kozhikode leave me better off than the option I have today?”
If the answer is yes, the 8.9/10 recommendation makes sense.
